Thursday Mixed Media Memories

Each child had something to use from their own 'babyhood' for this mixed media project. It was cool to watch them use these clothes as art, because the clothes are a part of their own history, and they are connected to it in a very unique way. Again they told stories about when they
wore the clothes and about being a baby...

Wed. Creatures

The inspiration for these Sculpey creations came from mythological creatures. The kids seemed to enjoy this idea; but when it came to sculpting they got lost in their own ideas of what the sculpture should become. I believe that my job here is to encourage these little artists to develop their imaginations. If they learn to trust their imagination, while learning to 'see' the world, they will produce exceptional and original works of Art......amen :)

not so traditional

Junk continued

these junk sculptures began last week, but the kids needed extra time to finish. Ely, still determined to construct a very tall tower out of various bits and pieces, needed to find the weakest area and then figure out how to support it with something strong....hmmmmm....sculpture wire! this piece is so simple and cool, we cant wait to see it in metallic silver!!

Jesse spent time telling the story of her sculpture, a flying plane over her waters and lots of characters floating around...dont forget the part about the dog that ate the junk that lies there too, you can even see a bit of his hair!!!

Anime Again!!!

I do think it's the GIANT eyes that the girls love, cause they want more....

Kandinsky

continuing the idea of music inspired art, finding the rhythms, lines and shapes in making art, we talked about Kandinsky. By using watercolor and salt the kids created beautiful backgrounds for their lines and shapes. The process was the best part, but the paintings are pretty interesting .
The kids learned about the reaction salt has on water, and they were fascinated by the way it is absorbed. I think they could have added watercolor by using these droppers all day, it was definitely meditative.....

JUNK

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see" - Degas

My Thursday kids started their Junk sculptures; and in deciding what objects to use and how to arrange them, they each had very different ideas about what they wanted to achieve with it. Brittney was all about the story and very concerned about the narrative. Ely was determined to construct a very tall tower. The basic instructions were the same, but it was obvious that each child was hearing it very differently. The best thing about Art is that that is what makes it awesome, the 'product' reflects the individuality of the artist, and conveys something unique which is then left up to the viewer to figure out and interpret....
(so watch out for all that art that comes home from school looking the same as the next kids...or the teachers :)

Taking A Line for a Walk

while listening to music the kids started with a line somewhere on the paper, and kept it "walking" until the music stopped. We've been talking about lines v. shapes, so this exercise helped them understand the difference while discovering their own cool shapes form with a continuous line . and the results were really beautiful.
