It's all about the Story....
dirt + lard was our recipe. the kids enjoyed the process of mixing the 'paint' with their hands and with sticks until the mixture looked good enough to paint with. Then they began creating images on canvas boards. Most had a story to go along with the picture, just like real cave paintings. Dead cows and Bears and Volcanos, things like that...
just like they did since the beginning of time.....

ICE - Group Sculpture...
this was really exciting. Working with something that you know will melt adds to the thrill. The kids LOVED making this sculpture and even loved watching it deteriorate...The ice blocks themselves were beautiful because there were hidden treasures inside, flowers and little animals and marbles. The colors were great too. We also added fake snow...
Creativity...
is a type of learning process where the teacher and pupil are located in the same individual....
.....with the help of me and another Mom, and of course the kids, these images were created. I think its important to let go of all the knowledge and experience we have as adults and allow the process of art making happen spontaneously with the kids. I think we can learn to see things differently, if we respect the kids' points of view. I love to hear that "this is the first time my child has ever touched paper mache, or has ever made a collage"....I feel so touched, knowing that they may remember this experience forever, and that it can have an impact on their creative lives...doing something for the first time with me in my studio...and hopefully its a positive experience and hopefully we both discovered something no one ever has discovered before!! That's the goal inspiration....

Its The Process
(but the product is so cool too)
Brittney is creating her 'clouds', she is definitely working things out as she explores clay and mixed media. Although she doesn't seem to really understand what 'mixed media' is, she actually gets in on a level that can't really be explained. She is using WHATEVER she can to achieve the look of clouds that she has in her mind. That is what mixed media is, not using things for the sake of it, but for the sake of the image in her mind. And Brittney will use whatever possible to make these clouds satisfying to herself. Its awesome because she doesnt care what anyone thinks. She is in her on world...and its a good place to be....
Creative Impulses
Thanks to my Jungian expert friend Shawn I have Carl Jung on my mind while I observe my little artists create from a place I am familiar with......Thank you Shawn.
"FROM THE LIVING FOUNTAIN OF INSTINCT FLOWS EVERYTHING THAT IS CREATIVE; HENCE THE UNCONSCIOUS IS NOT MERELY CONDITIONED BY HISTORY, BUT IS THE VERY SOURCE OF THE CREATIVE IMPULSE" - Carl Jung

12 Year Olds.....
its a pleasure to watch these girls draw. it seems relaxing for them after a long day at school, to sit and just sketch...no pressure. no right or wrong.... while warming up with a Klee drawing, or looking at themselves in the mirror for their self portraits, they managed to chat and giggle and the whole experience was very cool. not to mention the art...cant wait to see what they do with these drawings next week...i'll have lots of media waiting for them to explore.....
